 The FE Civil exam can be challenging, but with these tips, tricks, and strategies, you'll improve your chances of becoming the professional engineer you aspire to be. We'll break down your FE exam journey into four "phases," starting from the beginning and leaving the end for you to discover!

You've just signed up for the FE civil practice exam and might be feeling unprepared, or even unsure of how to get ready. This marks the very beginning of the first phase, which is the preparation phase. Next comes the second phase: T-Minus 24 Hours. Then, phase three kicks in: Examination Exhilaration. Finally, we arrive at the most satisfying phase: Celebration. Each phase comes with its own set of tips and strategies to take advantage of. Let's get started.


Phase 1: Preparation Paradise

This phase can be as long or short as you make it. Avoid the mistake of not studying and relying solely on your existing knowledge. Ideally, this should be the longest phase to maximize benefits and build confidence. Try dedicating 6 months to this phase, as longer periods might result in forgetting material.

Phase  2: T-Minus 24 Hours

Don't study the day before the test. If you've followed all the tips and tricks up to this point you don't need to. Get your bag packed, relax, do something fun, and eat well to ensure you are healthy for the exam day. It’s recommended to bring all your notes and books, earplugs, two calculators, a sweatshirt and other basic things.

Be confident on this day. Double-check your bags, pack your things, and enjoy the rest of the day. Stay fully prepared to come out as a winner.



Phase  3: Examination Exhilaration

Your vehicle is loaded with all your tools, your mind is equipped with all the skills, and you’ve driven this route under the same conditions before. You’re ready. Ensure you have a good breakfast and arrive early at the testing site with all necessary items like your ID card and testing papers.

As you enter the testing room and find your seat, take stock of the space available for your materials and references. The morning portion of the Civil-Structural FE exam requires all subjects to be within reach. Listen carefully to the instructions, and when you open the exam, don’t start with the first question.

Instead, begin by ranking each question from 1 to 4 based on difficulty. Leverage your knowledge of your strengths and weaknesses. Quickly scan each question and mark it with a circled number in the corner corresponding to its difficulty level. Once all the given questions are ranked, start the process of solving accordingly. 

  • If you have ample time, consider retaking the test!
  • If time is running low, choose the best answers for the remaining difficult questions and double-check the others if possible. Apply this same technique to the PE civil exam. 

Phase 4: Celebration 

Drive home with excitement, knowing you passed (if you followed these tips and tricks). Plan a celebration day with your loved ones or colleagues. Let all the stress lift from your shoulders and wait for your results. By steering clear of the pitfalls and following these strategies, you'll soon be able to add "P.E." to your email signature! Before the Live Online course begins, ensure you have all exam-day books and important notes printed. This lets you focus on lectures, practice problems, and relevant questions. It's recommended to have your notes tabbed beforehand since you can't pause live lectures.

As exam day approaches, dedicate a month to solving as many practice problems as possible using various useful resources. This intense preparation helps in the identification of strengths as well as weaknesses. Study solutions, take additional notes, and be ready for similar questions on the exam.

In the final weeks, ensure familiarity with your textbooks. Review how each is organized and navigate to topics or equations needed on the exam. Familiarity with them will be beneficial for you.

One week before the exam, do a test run at the exam site on the same day and time as your test. Arrive early to avoid unnecessary waiting.
